He was on the team his freshman year came home a month or so early so he could start on the new semester and wanted to start on his scholarship at BYU in January, no scholarship for him that semester and he was slated as a LB before his mission (we had lots of depth there) so he transferred (encouraged) to ASU, where he ended up playing DL and starting most of the time after his return, and then low and behold, BYU was desperate for DL bodies during that same time period, while we watched a cast of start and get PAC-12 honorable mention at the position.
Didn't seem like a big deal at the time when he came home, and there was another more vocal player in the same boat that semester that kind of overshadowed Hills transfer, but in retrospect was a pretty dumb decision for the coaches, and I am sure there were some not so friendly feelings from the Hills as a result. It wasn't a very well planned scholarship count semester that year.
