Aren’t you making a lot of assumptions within your questions? Have you jumped to conclusions? How do you come to define firesides as “fluff”? How do you know that they don’t help with performance on the field? What evidence do you have that they hurt? Has any scientific research even been done on any relationship between firesides and athletic performance? If so, please share.
With regard to a new candidate…are you implying that having (or not having) firesides are some sort of step toward generating “a new candidate”? Do you have any experience with, or any pertinent knowledge of what it would actually take to get a “new candidate”?
And, how do you even know there should be a new candidate? Have you ever hired or fired a D1 coach? Are you aware of anything other than personal dissatisfaction of a reason to terminate? Do you know what mandates the BYU coach gets from the Administration? How about knowing what the Owner’s instructions are? Couldn’t the current coach possibly be the perfect fit considering all the criteria required for this position that no-one but the principals have direct knowledge of?
By the way, no one is “untouchable”.
