Coaches, players, and fans - still a popularity contest
And I am well aware of the evolution of the TE position, but even keeping in mind the diminishing importance of TE blocking, the current era is still a much better era for tight ends than 2000-2002, which were Lewis' best seasons. Really his only good seasons.

And Lewis became a better blocker in the pros; he didn't have to block at BYU much more than Pitta did. In fact, he didn't get any traction in the league until his blocking went from bad to average.

Pitta was a much, much better player at BYU and is already a comparable player as a pro. No way does Lewis go higher on the all-time BYU TE list than Pitta.
