in that case, maybe he was really trying to pay the BYU fanbase a compliment?
since he believed (believes?) there are some serious endemic or systemic issues, maybe he's saying he's grateful for all the like minded individuals that see the same problems?
Another disconcerting part of his statement, to me, is that if there were a big enough problem for him to leave, it would seem that at least part of that problem might be coming from the very top.
