17,500 is what you can contribute. Employer match is on top of that
Even if you are covered by a 401(k) plan, you can also contribute the full amount to a Roth IRA if you're married and filing jointly, and your modified adjusted gross income is $181,000 or less in 2014.

The limits are higher for people over 50, IIRC.
