No, that isn't the case. When the Jazz named Ty coach, Jeff had zero experience
and hadn't even committed to being a full time coach. Jeff agreed to be an assistant on Ty's staff for the remainder of the season after Jerry left. After those last twenty or so games, Ty offered Jeff a chance to join Ty's staff as a full time assistant and Jeff decided to give it a try. Jeff was Ty's assistant for about two and a third years where he got the experience needed to be a candidate for the Phoenix job.

That was Phoenix's brilliant move.
