most of the scholarships in this era and going forward are from donor
endowments. The departments generally have some strings attached and there is generally some gathering of some kind once or twice a year. The idea is for the student to realize that somebody made a very large sacrifice of $$ and probably a lot of time as well so that your student can have the benefit.

It is really important for the new generation of kids to know that BYU is the result of people in the past paying for things that they enjoy. As a general rule this is true of the buildings as well. Donors pay for almost all buildings unless there is something specific that the church wants done.

I am endowing a graduate scholarship slowly. A full tuition scholarship for the Marriott School now runs $100K...not an easy thing to do. Once it reaches 50% the church which controls all the money will allow us to award 1/2 scholarship and then full once all the money is there.

Please teach your kids to be grateful....nothing comes without sacrifice.
