I don't think they are abandoning it, but I think they definitely are trying to set up an out if they are ever told they have to get rid of it. The red tailed hawk and the block-U have both been a part of that. As well as market diversity.
That said, they struck a deal with the Ute tribe this week or last week where they effectively committed to use of the Ute-logo for the foreseeable future. I wager the drum and feather is here to stay - at least for another 30 years or so if/when the political landscape changes and it becomes a hot-topic again.
