The third set turned out to be the most competitive as BYU went for the sweep. With the score tied at 6-6, the home-court advantage literally made a difference as a Cougar dig struck the only portion of a speaker up in the rafters that was in play.

BYU continued playing, knowing the ball was still live and Rivera set the ball back to USC — but the Trojans assumed the ball was out and had already huddled up to prepare for the next point.

"It's the first time I've seen that for us," McGown said. "I've seen it happen to us but I've never seen us do it to someone else."
