In one (I believe the 2nd) he started (at least played) on the kick off team. The guy did not like standing around and getting credit for things he didn't participate in.

There were stories that came out from others of him having a bunch of un-cashed NFL pay checks in a drawer for times when he wasn't playing and couldn't bring himself to cash them as he felt he hadn't earned them (I'm sure he eventually did).
