I've been waiting for the OnePlus One phone to become available to purchase. For those of you who aren't familiar with it, it's a new phone with processor, ram, and other internal specs that equal or exceed the top end phones currently available (S5, LG G3, M8, etc.), but at half the cost. Off contract and unlocked the phone is $299 for a 16GB version, and $349 for a 64GB version. The problem is you can't buy one. Production is being artificially limited, and you have to earn an invite to be able to buy the phone. It's not expected to be widely available for purchase for another 2-6 months.

Another Chinese company, Xiaomi, announced a new top-spec phone today. The Xiaomi Mi4 runs a snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of ram, and has a 13 MP camera with a 3000 mAH battery. It will ship with a version of Kit Kat 4.4.2, but with a Xiaomi skin layered on top. Price will be about $325 unlocked and off contract, less than half of the cost of a comparable Samsung, LG, HTC, etc. top end phone.
