When I was in graduate school in Missouri . . .
the Gospel Doctrine teacher in Sunday School started making all sorts of disparaging remarks about Pioneer Day the Sunday before July 24th. In fairness I must admit that he was doing it in part just to be snarky; he was a convert, but he really wasn't as opposed as his remarks sounded. Anyway, one convert sister in the ward piped up and told him and everyone else that she didn't have any ancestors who fought in the American Revolution, but she still celebrates the Independence Day on July 4th because it is part of her heritage as an American. Thus, she said that Pioneer Day and July 24th were now part of her heritage as a member of the Church even though she had no pioneer ancestry. It was still a time for her to honor the pioneers for their sacrifices that ultimately led to her being able to receive the gospel.
