The stock market is widely viewed by economists as a "leading indicator" which
means it tends to rise before the wider economy rises and fall before the wider economy tanks. So people watch it as a way of trying to understand in which direction things are trending economically, generally speaking.

Plus, a rising stock market creates wealth directly in shareholders' pockets, just like a falling stockmarket destroys wealth. So it is significant for this reason as well.
