There's a very good chance that in Mexico, amputation would have been seriously
considered.

My BiL's son from a previous marriage (long story) got hit by a car in Ecuador and broke his leg. The doctor was going to amputate his leg because the family couldn't afford anything else.

Our family, of course, all pitched in and quickly raised the money to have it properly fixed. He's now in the U.S. (6 or 7 years after the incident) and recently joined the Church.
