I suppose they could ask. I'd ask to see their corporate budget for the position
in exchange.
Seems like a pretty tacky practice from the hiring company. There is additional info that could be gleaned from the paystubs, like withholdings, garnihsments, address, SSN, etc that you may not want to share, or that could be used for them to figure out marital status, family situation, etc. And all of that stuff is a big no-no for recruiters in fair employment issues.
