I finally hiked the Y last week. We were in Utah for a family reunion
and some of us decided to hike the Y. I finished school in Provo 19 years ago and have been embarrassed to say I had never made the hike. Great view from up there but we got a little distracted pretty quickly.

There were a ton of people hiking that day (the 24th). My sons and I had been standing at the top of the Y when we heard some yelling. An eight year old boy had tripped and rolled from about half way up to the bottom of the Y. We hurried to the bottom where some guy was working on the boy a bit. He took off when my sister (a volunteer EMT in Cache County) and another MA showed up. The kid was totally scraped up on his back and legs and face. He had some bruising and a large gash above his hairline. He bled a lot initially but it stopped after a couple minutes. The kid was in shock. His worry was that he would have to get stitches and go to the hospital and he was just freaking out. My sister did an assessment then tried to get him to stand. He got dizzy immediately and they sat him back down.

At this point, we realized he wasn't walking down the trail so someone called 911. Soon, we heard the sirens and saw the emergency vehicles heading up to the trailhead. I think we were lucky that the kid's mom was very calm. It helped calm the boy down. If she had lost it, it wouldn't have been good.

They sent an EMT on a four wheeler up the trail. He looked at and assessed the kid and they called for a gator. He ended up going down on that and obviously ended up in the ambulance and at the hospital. I would imagine he ended up with stitches or staples or something.

I think the kid was pretty fortunate. It could have been a whole lot worse.
