I never had back problems until I was T-boned by someone that ran a red light a year and half ago. I find my high end pillow top mattress will cause some lower muscle tenderness/soreness. But a night in my sleeping bag and on my pad does wonders. Now other things are sore like my legs & Shoulders from the backpacking but not my back.
Unfortunately my wife won't let me sleep on the floor or I would make it a daily habit.
