This is always the best strategy, but this year it's crucial...
Take each game one at a time. Really, focus just on the next game on the schedule. Take each opponent very seriously and prepare carefully and thoroughly.

1. BYU doesn't have a conference championship to compete for so the only thing that matters is their record.

2. BYU's schedule is perceived to be weak this year, so anything less than a very stellar record will be looked at as a big disappointment, and will move BYU further away from the discussions about inclusion in a P5 conference.

3. There are a lot of potential "trip-up" games on the schedule. If you're not serious about every opponent, you could lose a head-scratcher.
---UCONN. On the road, on the East Coast, season-opener. Very similar to VA last yeara. Focus, focus, focus. Don't blow it.
---Houston in Provo. Tendency to overlook since the game's the home opener and BYU won in Houston last year. Don't succumb to that. This is an explosive team that BYU barely beat last year. Focus! Take care of business.
---Virginia in Provo. Time to erase a very bad memory. Hopefully, the team will be poised to pummel the Cavaliers. But they could think they were better than VA last year, and are better this year, and the game's at home, so all they need to do is show up. Not the case. Focus and execute!
---Utah State. This one will be circled on the Aggie's calendar. They lost Chuckie very early in last year's game. They'll be prepped and ready. BYU better be too. USU is a good team that BYU should beat. But if they're not focused and prepared they could easily lose this game.
---Boise St. Good team, but with a new coach. It will be easy to mentally dismiss the Broncos. After all, BYU handled them pretty easily last year. But this year's game is on the road, on that hideous smurf turf. This will not be an easy game. If BYU is not focused, prepared, and mentally and emotionally ready, they'll likely lose this game.
---Cal in Berkeley. Cal was very bad in the P12 last year. And although they should be much-improved, their record might not show it since the P12 is loaded this year. Cal has athletes and good coaching. If BYU comes into that game with a stellar ranking and record, and Cal has a bad record, the temptation will be very strong to overlook the Bears and focus more on what cool bowl game the Cougars might get invited to. They could think all they have to do is show up and they'll get a W. That won't be the case. This could very wll be the Bear's bowl game. They'll be ready. Hopefully, BYU will be as well. If not this W could easily turn into an L.

BYU better be focused, prepared, and ready for EVERY game this year. If not, they'll have 1 or 2 unexpected losses. Frankly, I'll be really ticked and disappointed if I don't see a team that's focused and executes well in the UCONN game.
