I noticed the same thing. And '91 too. All excellent teams that
finished ranked.
In the only seasons where BYU hasn't had a home game against a power conference team (since the program gained the ability to regularly get them to come to Provo), BYU has finished ranked:
1991-#23/23
2001-#24/25
2006-#15/16
