The Red Flag
We are now entering the first college football utilizing the college football playoff (CFP) format will the other New Year's six bowls as consolation prizes.

More teams, more money and more opportunity for teams like BYU to claim a spot and be the equivalent of the "BCS buster" right?

Wrong.

Dead wrong.

The red flag to this entire process is the fact that the selection committee uses NO objective criteria of any kind in determining their own set of team rankings used to determine placement in these bowl games. There are no computer models, no numeric results for strength of schedule, etc. The committee will be basing their votes on perception and perception alone.

Note the committee members:

Chair: Jeff Long - Director of Athletics at the University of Arkansas (SEC)
Barry Alvarez - Nebraska graduate and Wisconsin football coach-turned-athletics director. (B1G)
Pat Haden - Director of athletics at USC, (PAC12)
Tom Jernstedt - An Oregon native and former University of Oregon athlete. (PAC12)
Oliver Luck - Director of athletics at West Virginia. (Big12)
Archie Manning - Archie Manning is a University of Mississippi legend who played quarterback in the NFL from 1971-84. (SEC)
Tom Osborne - He served six years in the U.S. House of Representatives and also was Nebraska's athletics director. (B1G)
Dan Radakovich - Director of athletics at Clemson. (ACC)
Condoleezza Rice - Professor of political science at Stanford, where she has been on faculty at Stanford since 1981. (PAC12)
Mike Tranghese - Tranghese was commissioner of the Big East Conference for 19 years. (AAC?)
Steve Wieberg - USA Today college football reporter for 30 years. Missouri resident. (SEC?)
Tyrone Willingham - Former coach at Stanford, Notre Dame and the University of Washington. A Michigan State grad. (P5 nomad)
Lt. Gen. Michael Gould - Recently retired Superintendent of the United States Air Force Academy. (MWC)

(Credit to USA Today for above information)

Without getting into an extensive review of each of the above members, the committee is steeped in members with a point of view molded by the elitism of the P5 conferences. Yes, there is Tranghese, Gould but could 2 of 13 members really create any real pull for a non-P5 candidate?

I think not.

I know many on CB are still "believers" when it comes to BYU landing a spot in the above playoff system. I have posted on this issue many times, BYU is in a world of hurt when it comes to this committee style berth into the system.

Make no mistake, the 1984 and 1996 Cougars would have been written off in this system. Just recall the sentiment among what is now the P5 in those seasons. A 3 loss Penn St. team got into the BCA Bowls over a one loss Cougar team in 1996. That Alliance system is the closest thing to the CFP historically.
