Here's some numbers from 2006-2008 for 14+
Games against d1aa excluded.
When leading by 14+ points after one quarter, teams went 315-27 (.921)
When leading by 14+ points at halftime, teams went 728-38 (.950)
When leading by 14+ points after three quarters, team went 962-20 (.980)
Bottom line, don't worry about performing well when down two touchdowns, and concentrate on not getting in the hole in the first place. Score touchdowns and get up two touchdowns, and let the math work in your favor.
