"Ash needs to stay healthy because there is nothing close to a sure thing behind him at the position and the Longhorns would be in a world of hurt if something happens to him. When you look at the position in its simplest form, I just don't see it from Tyrone Swoopes and Jerrod Heard isn't ready yet.
Swoopes has improved on some things. The ball looks cleaner coming out of his hands and he seems to have at least a decent understanding of what he's doing in terms of where to go with the ball and feel for the offense.
His movements are clunky, his footwork still needs a ton of work and his accuracy doesn't appear to be much better than it was from the spring. Watson has done some good work with Swoopes, but from where the sophomore is now to where he needs to be in order to give Texas a chance to win the game when he's in the game resides an extremely significant gap.
Heard on the other hand is the opposite. He struggled some with his accuracy when throwing to targets but he was more consistent than Swoopes and seemed to settle in as practice moved along, and while the physical tools seem to be there you can tell from watching him that he's trying to keep his head above water this early in camp.
The bottom line is however long it takes Heard to get ready or Swoopes to get it together with his play will determine when the gap gets closed behind Ash at the position"
