The connection to iCloud on this was shaky from the get go. Apparently the original poster said the photos came from iCloud and many other places and people. Follow up posts said that a group of hackers had been working on this for a long time to get what they had. To me that indicates lots of sources and social engineering as brute force exploits are out there and already developed.
