So in the regular season, there is the potential for a maximum of 8 P5/Notre Dame teams winning the rest of their games from here on out with 6 of those teams ending undefeated. Even if that happens, however, conference championship games must be taken into account. In that case the maximum number of P5 undefeated teams entering playoff and bowl selection drops to 4. The other 16 teams currently ranked ahead of BYU in the AP Poll are all going to lose at least once, with the majority (9 teams) guaranteed to lose at least twice.

What does this mean? If BYU is undefeated in each of their one-game seasons, they are pretty much guaranteed to end in the Top Ten and as high as #5. Six teams who will lose at least once between now and the end of the season would have to remain ahead of BYU in the poll despite those losses to keep BYU out of the Top Ten at the end of the year. Not likely. Add in some 1984 style upsets, and things really begin to get interesting.

Bottom line: go undefeated and the NY6 is a lock.
