Interesting Stat from Weeks 1-3
***
First and foremost, I think BYU has the potential to win a lot of games this year, maybe even all of them and are probably a more complete football team than most thought heading in to week one. That said, they have been particularly bad in one area and I would really like to see them make improvements before it comes back to bite them.

At 10.7 per game, BYU is the 5th most penalized team in D-1 (they ended last year at #7 with 7.8 per game) with those penalties resulting in about 96 yards (8th most) and nearly 3 first downs (22nd most) per game.

Against Houston an illegal formation brought back a 32 yard TD pass and BYU punted a couple plays later. A 5 yd penalty, 7 points left off the board.

Later a holding penalty turned 2nd and goal from the HOU 3 into 2nd and goal from the HOU 13 and BYU eventually kicked a field goal. A 10 yd penalty, 4 points (justified by the 5-yard play they then ran on 2nd down).

When Houston had the ball, a personal foul turned 4th and goal at the BYU 16 into 1st and goal from the BYU 8. An 8 yd penalty, 4-7 points.

It is not like this is some some revolutionary or insightful observation, but penalties killed drives for BYU and elongated them for Houston. The game could have been 44-21 with just those 3 penalties left uncommitted.

Still waiting for them to "bring it back".

Coach Mendenhall after the UCONN game:
“Much like I thought there was tons of aggression out there,” Mendenhall said of the penalties. “And I’d rather have that and bring it back than the penalties being because of lack of technique or because of a lack of effort and being lazy. … There were some of them that actually made me smile.”
