Zero? I can't remember any through 3 games. It seems like they always end up being fielded between the 5-10 yard line. Fortunately our kickoff coverage has been pretty good so far.
We have 4 kickers and 2 punters on the team. That's 6 roster spots. If none of them can kick it to the endzone, that is a huge recruiting blunder. I understand you need depth at every position, but having 6 guys on the team whose only job is to kick the ball seems excessive to me.
I was just reading about ND's kicker/punter, Kyle Brindza. He handles all of ND's kicking duties; kickoffs, field goals, and punts. And he's really good at it. ND only has 3 kickers on their roster. Why do we need 6?
Is it really that hard to find and recruit a kid that can handle both kicking and punting responsibilities? Arellano has had some pretty good punts, and Trevor Samson has been serviceable, but I don't think we need a different guy to handle each aspect of the kicking game.
It seems like we've had question marks at kicker for several years now. Hopefully the coaches recognize it's time to rethink their recruiting strategy when it comes to kickers and punters. I'd rather have 1-2 solid kickers on scholarship than 6 guys on the roster who aren't reliable at the one job they have.
