I think all he was saying is that attendance numbers have fallen throughout all
sports due to the advent of high def TVs and home theatre systems.
This problem is not unique to BYU.
I've heard it is a serious threat to many other sports and the leagues are aware of this, thus you see improvements of game atmosphere such as Jerry's world to help lure people out of the comfort of their home.
TVs are "ruling" the market. Not that he personally thinks TVs actually rule.
