I wanted to come up with some way to try and compare this season with some of BYU's traditional 'best' season efforts. I searched around but didn't find anything, so this is my take on it. I know there is probably more I could have taken into account, but figured it was a start. I picked the following seasons to compare: 80, 83, 84, 96, and 06. I'm sure there could be more, but these 5 popped up the most in my searching.
All stats are from sports-reference.com and I used both their SOS and SRS (simple rating system) as measurements. For a better understanding of the SRS rating, click here. Instead of using the base rankings for these stats, I decided to use rank % based on actual ranking/# of NCAA teams (according to sports-reference), which I feel gave a better understanding of how BYU compared to the rest of the field. For some of the rankings we want higher %'s (i.e. win %, overall opp win %) and some we want lower %'s (i.e. for 2014, currently BYU has an SOS ranking % of 38%...meaning their SOS is in the top 38% of the country, etc.). And just so I could keep track of it (I'm slow on the uptake and the numbers started to get jumbled), I put in the last column whether we want the number to be higher or lower.
If a cell is highlighted green, then that stat for that year ranks best out of all the seasons listed (or is a tie). For the 2014 stats, it doesn't try to project the rest of the season, only what the team has done to date.
Disclaimer: I'm not a statitician, so sorry if this info could look better or make more sense. If you have any suggestions for changes, I'm all ears.
Go Cougs!!!
