Much more often I think he chooses to leave the pocket because he looks up and doesn't see what he wants and then runs. I think occasionally when he sees one on one coverage deep he should just send the ball and let the receiver reach for it. He has the arm for it and the receivers usually have a big size advantage. Do that a few times and it will scare the crap out of the defense.
