Great game. Virginia is better than I thought they were.
Here is my perspective.

First, I thought our guys played hard for the most part. I also think they took plays off after we got a two TD lead. The Virginia defense is as good as advertised, but they are susceptible to the deep ball. Wish we would have exploited that more.

Second, I am glad Blackmon is getting more reps. He is our only deep threat. I think Kurtz will help, but our other receivers (except for Leslie) have a hard time with press coverage.

Third, I was hoping to see more Algie Brown, but I guess the coaches are going to rest him more. Had he been in the game, it would have been a different game because he gives Taysom a great safety valve. Losing Leslie hurt, but it did give Blackmon more reps.

Fourth, our kickoff team was killing us in the first half. We just need to kick it deep, especially against good teams. I know Bronco likes to pin teams down in the corner, but field position was a big issue in the first half.

Fifth, I have never seen Arellano punt so well. He was arguably the player of the game. Field position worked in our favor in the second half.

Sixth, we were not prepared for their offense, and we didn't make good adjustments. I think this is mainly on coaching. They did the same offense that Oregon State used against us a couple of years ago in LES. Max protect the QB and wait for the receivers to come open underneath. We tend to rush 4-5 defenders most times, and our secondary can't cover longer than 4-5 seconds. That leaves the middle and flats wide open. Virginia also ran a lot of misdirection and screen passes effectively. They must have watched a lot of BYU film. We had linebackers trying to cover receivers and running backs, and we were way too soft. We just couldn't effectively rush the QB that well. Warner helped when he came in, but we really missed Bronson, not only to bring pressure but also to disrupt passing lanes with his height and athleticism. I give Coach Howell a C- for his defensive coaching this game.

Seventh, our defense was on the field way too long. They were getting tired in the second half, but so was Virginia. Good thing we are deep.

Eighth, Fred Warner needs more reps. He is disruptive. Period.

Ninth, our corners' technique needs work. They are just sloppy. The PI calls were generally right, even though some of them were picky.

Tenth, we won this game off big plays and turnovers. Had we not made some turnovers, Virginia wins this game.

We will be a lot better once we get Kaufusi, Kurtz, and Algie on the field. Hope Leslie can return for Utah State.
