There aren't an additional 6 games beyond the playoff. The playoff semifinals count as 2 of the 6. There are also certain auto-bids to the games, and the required ranking for making an NY6 game depends on where these auto-bid teams are ranked.

If we are top 4, we're in the playoff.

If we are 5-8, we are in an NY6.

If we are 9-12, then it depends on other teams. 9th will almost guarantee us a spot. 10th probably will. 11th and 12 most likely won't unless East Carolina is in the top 10.

If we are 13 or worse, we're in the Miami Beach bowl.

In other years, even a top 8 won't guarantee a spot, because when the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl aren't semifinal locations, there are more auto bids available and fewer at-large slots.
