2014 BYU situation compared to 1984
For those who have only read about 1984 and were too young to have lived it, some of what we are going through right now, and what we have ahead of us is similar.

In '84, we did indeed have several underwhelming performances and close, ugly wins. But the team kept lining-up every week and taking care of business. Some weeks we were good, other weeks we were lucky. We avoided key injuries. IIRC, we also probably got more than our fair share of lucky bounces and calls going our way.

We ALSO had - and will absolutely need to have in 2014 - a LOT of help and luck with higher ranked teams getting beat and knocking each other off. Once the SEC and PAC12 and ACC get into the heavy portion of their conference schedule we need parity to prevail and have them bounce each other out of the unbeaten ranks. We need the Alabamas and Florida States and Oregons and Notre Dames to lose as the season winds on.

I DO agree with a point made further down the board - it wouldn't hurt if did crush most of the rest of the teams on our schedule not named UCF, BSU and Cal. And if we get the problems fixed, really get this team rolling and stomp the aforementioned teams, so much the better.

One thing which is different and which we have in our favor is the exposure. We have 100 times more now than we did in 1984. ESPN and the internet/social media will keep us firmly in the national conversation as long as we keep winning. In 84, all this had to be done via newspaper articles and talking heads from the major networks (think Barry Switzer, Bryant Gumbel, Don James etc)

At any rate, just a few random thoughts. I have been frustrated with the mistakes and penalties the last two games, mostly because I see the talent and potential this team has and realize that 1/3 of the way through our schedule we still haven't fully realized it. But 4-0 and Top 20 ranked is GREAT, and I know everyone of us would have been thrilled if we knew pre-season we would be sitting in this spot.

It's a GREAT time for BYU football. GO COUGARS !!!
