My son has never been a "memorizer". He's done well in math, but had to work
really hard for it. Same with things like memorizing states and their capitals, memorizing dance steps in a social dance class he has, etc.

This year, with less focus on memorization in math, he's really taken off. Like, REALLY taken off. It's coming extremely easy for him, with a lot less time spent on it. Or, perhaps it's that others who do really well with the memorization are just relatively struggling much more now that it is more a conceptual focus.

At any rate, what it indicates to me, is that people really do learn in such different ways, that perhaps there should be a Common Core track and a Traditional track when it comes to learning. I think some kids are thriving in common core, and others that learned better the other way, are struggling more.
