In the book, Aragorn steals the Corsair's ships using the Dead Men of Dunharrow, and his arrival w/ actual living people changes the battle and encourages the Rohirrim and Gondor to fight on. The battle is won by people. In the movie, all hope is lost until Aragorn arrives with his army of dead and they just clean house over the entire battlefield.
