So, I read this article that gives a glimpse into how the selection committee may be looking at games to evaluate teams for the final four.

Barry Alvarez seems to like a stat called relative offense and defense:
“While Alvarez said he doesn't place much stock in margin of victory, he does pay close attention to a statistic on relative offensive and defensive performance. In other words, let's say a team scores 50 points four games in a row, but the teams they're playing give up an average of 45," Alvarez said. "And then you've got someone who's played a very difficult schedule and they're averaging 21 points a game, but the teams they're playing only give up an average of 10 points. There's a huge difference there.”
So, I decided to calculate BYU’s relative offense and defense versus our opponents. The results seem to be quite favorable for BYU if we continue to perform at the level we have so far. Of course, this all assumes we go undefeated.
Here are the results by opponent and on the season as a total average:
Under the difference column, a + number is good for BYU, - is bad.
__________avg pts scored___pts scored vs. BYU__Difference____avg pts allowed__pts allowed vs BYU__Difference
UConn________18.00_________10.00___________8.00__________23.67___________35.00__________11.33
Texas_________27.50_________7.00____________20.50_________13.50 __________41.00__________27.50
Houston_______33.67_________25.00___________8.67__________13.67___________33.00__________19.33
Virginia________29.33_________33.00__________-3.67__________20.67___________41.00__________20.33
Total Avg______27.13_________18.75___________8.38__________17.88___________37.50__________19.63
This shows that our offense is clearly performing much better than our opponents' opponents, to the tune of 19.63 points better than what our opponents give up on average.
Our defense, while not quite as impressive as our offense, is also quite good. BYUs defense gives up on average 8.38 points less to our opponents than they score against their other opponents.
Here's to hoping BYU can keep up this pace and that Barry really likes this stat when it comes down to the last few teams he's evaluating.
