I can think one one big reason why
Utah runs some read-option, and Wilson is practically a non-threat to pull it and run. The weird thing is, when he does, he gets good yards. He is just terrible at avoiding hits. Has no clue how to slide, as his Michigan hurdle and awkward head first dive against Wazzu shows. So I do not know if it is coaching or design, but he needs to run it more, and maybe they do not want him to, but want Thompson to get those reps instead. Not sure they trust Wilson to avoid contact.

In the Wazzu game, WIslon had the edge all game long if he kept it on read-option. Wazzu respected his running exactly zero, which means they were able to defend the rest of the field better. If he runs more like he did last year aginst Oregon State and even UCLA, Utah gets better on O and moves the chains better.

Question will be will they go for it with him, or hold him back in that area. If they are willing to play Thompson more, they ought to just go for it with Wilson and let him run it 8-10 per game.
