From his autobiography "LaVell: Airing it Out"
On Sunday night Mr. Ford, the owner of the club called me at home. He told me the job was mine and all we needed to do was sign the papers. I said "Fine, just let me have a day." I'd try to have everything straightened away at BYU the next day, Monday, and I'd get back to him Monday night.
Sometime between a sleepless Sunday night and Monday morning it dawned on me: My heart just wasn't in this decision. If I wasn't willing to drop everything and go, what business did I have going at all?
I called them back and said I'd changed my mind; I'd decided to stay at BYU. They were gracious about it, and they went to work on getting someone else.
