one reason bronco is safe
The gulf between the average CougarBoard member (obsessive super-fans with tons of football knowledge) and the *average* BYU football fan (students and alumni, mostly, who watch the games when they're on TV) is HUGE — and probably bigger than it is at most powerhouse programs. So while CB is calling for Bronco's head, it's mostly under-the-breath grumbling in most of "Cougar Nation."

I think very few ordinary fans know or care enough to agitate for a high-profile firing of a head coach who reminds a lot of them of their bishops, scout leaders, and dads. They would like to see BYU win a big bowl or make it to the playoff, but most of the average fans I talk to aren't bothered enough by the status quo to demand a change at the top coaching spot.

Add to that the fact that fans under 30 or 35 (that includes me) have never seen a BYU football team be nationally dominant, and have a hard time expecting elite excellence from the program. I can see this, objectively, in myself. Personally, I understand the arguments for cutting Bronco loose once his contract ends, but I'm just not as worked up about it as others are because it's hard for me to expect BYU football to be an elite program. As long as I've been old enough to follow football, it's never happened!
