You don't have to be an expert to have a general idea of what is wrong with BYU
The idea that you have to be an expert or insider into the program to know what is wrong or lacking with BYU football is not true. You can get a pretty good idea just by watching BYU, listening to what the coaches say and watching a lot of other football.

Here's what I would say with relative certainty after watching BYU football and being a huge fan of college football for more than 30 years.

1) For BYU to have a chance at that special season every 5 years or so, BYU needs great coaching. We need coaches that know what it takes to be successful, know how to recruit, are good at in-game adjustments and game plans and more than anything flexible. Because we will never recruit the best players in the country, we need coaches that are able to find any advantage they can from week-to-week. Bronco unfortunately doesn't do this. He's anything but flexible. He's basically tied himself to his system which has never proven to beat any team more than your above average football team. He struggles dealing with and recruiting top talent, seems to show bias in playing what he calls "the most deserving player" and has hitched his entire game plan to execution. This strategy is never going to bring greatness to BYU because it is too narrow a strategy and way too rigid and conservative. Neither Bronco nor Anae are creative and aggressive enough from a game planning and play calling perspective. If you have great talent or even good talent, you can play more conservatively but when you have less than that you have to play more aggressively.

2) BYU needs more speed on both sides of the football. This has ALWAYS been a problem at BYU but I don't believe it should be as extreme a problem as it is. I personally think it's more of a scheme and recruiting problem than an honor code problem. Our recruiting at DE position is just terrible. And while we do tend to recruit decent LBs we still play too many LBs that are plain bad at blitzing and can't put any pressure on opposing QBs. If we are going to successfully play the 3-4, our recruiting needs to improve vastly in getting guys that can get to the QB much quicker. The sacrifice with going faster/smaller is meaning that our run defense might suffer but again that is the risk you have to take at BYU because too many teams throw the ball well. No longer can you sit back and let any QB pick you apart.

3) Go Fast Go Hard is an illogical offense for BYU to run 100 percent of the time. BYU will never have the depth to allow our guys on both sides of the ball to play that many more plays per game. I wouldn't mind if BYU were to use GHGF when the situation dictates but as an offensive strategy it is counter-productive for BYU and its talent pool.

4) BYU must have a QB that can pass the ball well to be successful. As much as I loved watching Taysom, he has never been good at passing the football. Thus, not surprisingly he was running the ball way too much and sustained the type of injury he did. Moreover, the offense was just too vanilla and one-dimensional with Hill at QB. Again, far too many schools pass the ball well and BYU really hasn't been anything but average since Hall graduated and this period has coincided exactly with not having QBs that pass the ball well. BYU has to do a better job of recruiting and grooming QBs.

5) The last piece is where BYU really has issues is the offensive line. The line is better this year but that's not saying much as the Oline has been bad for 5+ years. Like the old saying goes, football is won in the trenches. Well, BYU has been losing in the trenches for years and until that changes, BYU will continue to be average to above average at best.
