The myth of the flywheel
Good to Great is an interesting read, and many of the principles were very prominent in BYU's early success under Bronco and also Boise State's success under Peterson. However, Bronco is his own worst enemy when it comes to implementing his philosophy. Early in his career, Bronco shunned the recruiting process, making it difficult to get the right people on the bus. Yes, talent matters. Bronco felt like it was more important to get people that bought into his vision, than it was to get people that could actually execute it. In fairness to Bronco, it seems he has done more with recruiting in recent years.

Another prominent point in the book is that you have a "Hedgehog Concept", a concerted idea in how you can be the best in the world in your field. BYU won it's national championship and was great in the 80's because they were the best in the world at slinging the football around the field. What's BYU's Hedgehog Concept now? It's not "execution". It's not "maniacal effort". It's not the passing game. It's GFGH apparently. The problem is, BYU WILL NEVER be the best in the world at GFGH. We don't have the athletes on the edge. And most years, we won't have the athletic QB needed to run it, though we did this year until Taysom got hurt. What can be BYU be the best in the world at? That's a question that is difficult to answer, but I would think it would revolve around QB play throwing the ball around and a power running game utilizing our polynesian battering rams.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, from everything I've heard Bronco seems to think that the flywheel makes success effortless once you get it going. That it will just keep going continuously because of momentum. This simply isn't true. A reduction in the effort applied to a flywheel will always lead to a gradual decrease in it's angular velocity. While it may "feel" like you're not doing anything, you still need to apply the same effort every day to keep that thing moving.
