I get your logic here, though I disagree...but, just a tad curious at this point
Do you actually believe that BYU's football program is struggling at this moment because of the HC?

I think it's the coaching. Flat out. If we win games, big recruits will come. If we get kids into the NFL, talent will come.

You can always argue that the pool of recruits will be smaller and the highest talent level isn't available to BYU but it's not entirely to do with the HC. And I doubt lessening the severity of punishment for non member athletes will suddenly attract top talent. I don't think the first thing on a kid's mind concerning the HC is how harsh the consequences will be when they mess up. It's probably more to do with whether they will enjoy the environment, have a good experience, while excelling and winning on the field.

The yewts still struggle recruiting top talent. Why? Not because of an HC. They will struggle because they will be just like any other program out there...but if a kid had to choose between a school in CA or UT (all things the same) they go to CA for the environment and to escape the perceived stereotypes of Utah.

Why be like the yewts? Becoming yewt-south is a stupid idea.

BYU can bring in legit talent, good kids who will live "higher standards"...they just need to be coached right and win freaking games. That's it.
