BYU was once committed to athletic excellence and it showed. They won many awards, even national championships. Because of this and a couple other factors, BYU gained a very hard core following and that is what BYU has today. Whether happy or down right now, we're all still a part of this following. Some of us are happy because we're BYU fans and BYU always recovers from situations such as this. Some of us are mad because of a lack of success but we're all in this boat.
The reason we're in a unique situation is because IT SEEMS that BYU has given up on this commitment. We don't know the reasons and those aren't important right now. All we know is that BYU seems to be watching all other major programs pass us by because we're not a win at all costs school. We're not even a win at most costs school which we once were.
For better or worse, some are jumping ship because they are cheering for a different BYU than they once were. I don't blame people for jumping ship. It is as if we're relegating ourselves to Ivy League status. No one becomes a fan of an Ivy League school unless they go to the school or have some other tie to it.
This is just the way I see it.
