BYU TV Ratings Update
Full Disclosure: I took the Utah State loss pretty hard. spent the next few weeks not looking at anything college football related, besides the weekly BYU game. Watched a lot of baseball. Didn't update any of my college football spreadsheets. I finally came back to CB today to look for some basketball talk, and noticed I had some boardmail asking for an update to this, so here it is. As before, these stats are pulled from sportsmediawatch.com, and the SEC Network, CBS Sports Network, the Big Ten Network and the Pac-12 Network do not get Nielsen rated, and therefore we have no accurate data for those.

Game by Game
@ UConn: 1,080,000
@ Texas: 910,000
Vs. Houston: 1,050,000
Vs. Virginia: 1,640,000
Vs. Utah State: 1,170,000
@ UCF: 1,340,000
Vs. Nevada: 404,000
@ Boise: 1,020,000

BYU TV Stats Through 8 Games:
Total Games Televised Nationally: 8 (#1/130)
Total Viewers: 8,614,000 (#33/130)
Average Viewers per Game: 1,076,750 (#59/130)

The relationship with ESPN still gets us on the TV. We were the only team in the country that had 8 televised games as of last week. Still, thats not enough to raise our average when we lose. This will always be a "might have been" season, and in viewership it's no different. The positive takeaway is, we're still getting a million per game average. That's pretty great considering how tough that 4 game losing streak was for us.

I also compare where BYU's average viewership per game ranks in the other major conferences. If BYU was in Conference X, we would be ranked X in viewership:

P5
ACC.......#13 (Virtual tie with #12 Ga. Tech [they beat us by 650 average viewers] and ahead of UNC and Pitt)
BIG10....#9 (Down year for them. We're ahead of Purdue, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern and Minnesota. We trail #8 Rutgers by 300K)
BIG12....#10 (Only ahead of Kansas, but by 600k. Trail #9 Texas Tech by 200K)
PAC12....#10 (Beating Oregon St., Cal and Colorado, and trailing #9 Washington by 250K)
SEC........#15 (Man do these cats watch some football. We trail Vandy by about 55K)

G5
AAC.......#1 (by about 200K)
CUSA.....#3 (We trail Rice and Southern Miss. They are anomalies based on opponents [TAMU and Notre Dame for Rice, and Bama for So. Miss.])
MAC......#3 (We trail Kent State and Buffalo for the same reasons as above, but replace the opponents with Ohio State and Baylor.)
MWC.....#3 (only Fresno and Boise are ahead of us, both by about 200K. We lead Nevada by about the same.)
SUN......#1 (by about 350K)

We are definitely a step ahead of almost all G5 schools, and maybe all. Looking at the viewership numbers for Boise and Fresno by game can be helpful:
Fresno
Boise St: 1,620,000
New Mexico: 838,000
USC: 1,350,000
When not playing a power 5 opponent, or an opponent that has conference champion ramifications, they only had 800K
Boise
BYU: 1,020,000
Colorado State: 686,000
Fresno St: 1,620,000
Ole Miss: 2,420,000
Uconn: 466,000
Same story as Fresno, but with the added benefit of seeing a head to head viewership matchup in UConn. We had 600K more viewers. Whether we are better than Fresno and Boise may be debatable, but even if we are, we are one of the 3 best G5 schools by TV viewership, even in a .500 season. That's positive and bodes well for a potential conference invite.
When it comes to P5 schools, we are clearly below the salt, but Rutgers provides an interesting case study. Last year they were in the "We're still part of the BCS, even if Memphis is in our conference" AAC. That put them somewhere between P5 and G5 in prestige, similar to our situation in independence. By their 9th game last year and this year, they sat at a 5-4 record, like ours this year. But, by being in the Big 10 this year, they have increased their viewership by 300K viewers per game. If we were to get an invite, we'd most likely experience some kind of bump, and 300K at least seems like a solid expectation.
Anyway, this is way too long, but there are the numbers. Keep supporting our boys, they need it more during a tough year like this one than any other.
