Hairbrained Ideas: what I would do if I were Craig Thompson
If you don't want to think about the MWC, or BYU involved with it, you should stop reading now. Just save us all inevitable.

So if I were Hair (and I'm glad I'm not), I would be trying to do a few things:
1. Stabilize my conference as a viable Western counterpart to the PAC
2. Create a strong basketball conference (NCAA tournament credit $$$)
3. Push with the ACC for an 8 team CFB playoff

So how to do that? First, I would make up with BYU. I would acquiesce on media rights, because with BYU back in the fold I get all of BYU's road conference games, and conference basketball games. I would let BYU do what they wish with their tier 3 rights, and I'd make it easy for BYUtv to replay games and have access to conference telecasts and conference partners. In short, I would let BYU still use BYUtv as a delivery tool, and piggyback some MWC content there.

I would start working on the next media deal with ESPN, but also think about CBS and NBC. I would try to get CBS or NBC to piggyback MWC content on a lower tier network like CBSCS, like a nightly highlight show, and seasonal football and basketball programming. In short, have the MTN but scaled back in focus, but on a national platform.

I would kick Hawaii out of the conference. They are football only anyways. Sorry Norm but it's not us, it's you.

So that still leaves the MWC with 12 schools. I would invite Houston and SMU, creating a 14 team football conference contiguous from Texas to California. I would make two 7 team divisions, with teams playing six divisional games and two against the othe division:

West- SDSU, UNLV, Fresno, Nevada, SJSU, Boise, BYU
East- USU, CSU, AFA, Wyoming, UNM, SMU, Houston

I would have a CCG in the new Vegas stadium. I would push for access to the bowl playoff. Ideally it would be for an auto bid to a 16 team playoff, but I might have to settle for limited access to pool of 8.

Then I would invite Gonzaga and Wichita State as full conference members (neither has football). Zags get added to the West and Shockers are in the East. For basketball each team plays a home and home against their division (14 games) and a game against each team from the other division (8 games). That's a really strong basketball conference, with the tournament to be played at the new arena for the Warriors in San Francisco.

I would have each school pay small stipends to their players, as well as other amenities, somewhat in line with P5 schools.

As a BYU fan, I would obviously prefer to be in the PAC or Big12. But that isn't going to happen. This, to me at least, but would the most appealing scenario for BYU, and a huge win for the MWC. I'm not saying this is plausible or even possible, really just kicking around an idea.
