When I was 10 years old we lived in Colo. Sprgs. That year we went to the BYU vs
AFA game and in 15 degree weather and a foot of snow on the ground we watched Ty and BYU blast AFA 54-7. I was adamant that I was going to get Ty's autograph after the game and that I would stay at the stadium as long as it took to complete my objective. My dad talked some sense into me and said that Ty and the team were freezing and would want to head for the locker room the second the game was over. He told me that I should go home and draw a picture of Ty and mail it to him and see if he would respond. The second we got home I drew a picture and wrote him a letter. It was in the mail first thing Monday morning. The very next Saturday BYU was playing a ranked Wyoming team on ESPN. We were watching the game and at half time my dad asked if I wanted to check the mail. I ran to the mail box and found Ty had already returned my picture signed and wrote me a brief letter thanking me for sitting through the cold and watching him play and that he appreciated me and my family as fans. With all the buzz and hype he was getting at that time he still returned signed and returned my picture in less than a week, and wrote me a letter. I spent the next week bragging to my friends at school that Ty Detmer wrote me a letter and signed the picture I drew. I did the same thing with Shawn Bradley. He did the same thing and returned the signed picture with a short note in about a weeks time as well. I still have those pictures hanging in my basement.
