If he can get them on the field and actually contributing, I fully support that. But to just burn redshirts for the heck of it? Dumb. And to blame it on NFL potential? Look, if a kid wants to and has the potential to go to the NFL, he can leave whenever he's been out of high school for at least 3 years. Nothing except for the fact that they haven't had pro-potential has been keeping our 7th and 8th year redshirt senior RM's from having left early for the NFL.
The ONLY benefit to burning a kid's redshirt year with garbage plays vs a garbage opponent is to tell the kid you screwed up recruiting him and don't think he has any potential to ever really play for you, ala Billy Green. I hope that's not the case with a couple of guys we burned on Saturday, but that really is the only reason to do it aside from coaching stupidity.
