Depends on what happens this year
If 3 SEC teams make the playoffs, the outcry will be immediate. The 3 left out conferences will demand changes for next year.

If the playoffs make as much money and are as popular as expected, then it will happen in 2-4 years. The bowls will demand to be included and they will trade their New Year's day bowl for another road of playoffs. It's unlikely people will care who wins the Rose Bowl or Cotton Bowl if a semi-final is being played elsewhere.

If the FCS is any indication, and it will probably be more important for FBS, they will expand quickly. FCS has 22 teams now compared to 4 for FBS. The bowls are going to take a major hit, just like the NIT has taken as the NCAA tourney has become more popular.

Can you imagine anyone watching the .500 NFL teams that didn't make the playoffs? Only hard core fans who have nothing else to watch would tune in. They will become like the MAC playing on Tuesday nights.
