several years with people making all kinds of pointless idiotic comparisons and passionately arguing one way or another.
In my opinion, I think that the apparent disjunction in fan attitudes about each coach can be explained by the sum total of "surprising moments." By that, I mean have there been more net happy surprises or unhappy surprises from each coach/their team? If you look at the surprises that have happened under each coach, I think it's pretty obvious that the bball team has pleasantly surprised more often while the football team has unpleasantly surprised more often. There are literally thousands of examples, but here are just a couple:
- The bball team gets some poorly recruited kid out of a small town in NY, but (SURPRISE!) he ends up being the consensus national player of the year. In contrast, the football team gets the #1 ranked QB in the nation from of a nationally ranked HS team and (SURPRISE!) he turns into a total bust.
- This season, the football team is ranked in the top 20 but (SURPRISE!) loses in ugly fashion to an unranked team they were favored to beat easily. In contrast, the bball team played a top 20 ranked team in a game they were expected to lose (though, not by that much) and (SURPRISE!) forced 2 overtimes and almost won. Sure, the ultimate outcome was the same in both games, but the outcome relative to expectations was positive for bball and negative for football.
