The reality is you can't really make a blanket statement that the "shale plays"
are profitable at any price. Basin economics vary significantly across and even within basins. For example, oil prices required for 10% single-well IRRs in the Bakken range from ~$25 to $90. $75 oil would take out of play some of the development projects, but there would still be plenty of profitable shale opportunities.
