Abrhams has done a good job with Star Trek (the first one was fantastic) but transwarp beaming is stupid and so is people being all aghast that an admiral in the military had a military ship built - or are we supposed to believe that all those advanced weapons on the Enterprise are for "exploration"? Not to mention a chief engineer on a warship resigning because he had to load weapons onto his warship.

As for the eagles - read the books. The eagles are just birds. Big ones - but still just birds. They would have been destroyed long before they even got close to Mordor. Although according to Jackson, Aragorn could beat all nine of the Nazgul alone with just a torch and bad breath while defending four useless hobbits - so I guess they weren't up to the challenge of fighting big birds.
